Grade 1 Social Studies Worksheets
Six free printable grade 1 social studies worksheets, 66 exercises across three subjects. Every sheet prints its answer key on a separate page, and none of them needs an account.
Social studies in grade 1
In many US schools, first grade social studies often introduces children to their place in the world — their family, neighborhood, and community — alongside early map skills and basic civics. Topics such as rules and responsibilities, the difference between needs and wants, and an introduction to land and water features are common at this level, though exact content varies by district and state.
The six worksheets on this page cover map skills, world geography and civics: the compass rose and cardinal directions, map keys and legends, the continents and oceans, and rights and responsibilities. Two sheets are written specifically for grade 1; the others are written for kindergarten or grade 2 and are noted as suited to first grade. A teacher or parent can pick by subject, print each answer key on its own page, or choose a sheet from a neighboring grade to match a child's level.
What is on this page
There are six printable sheets on this page. Two of them were written for grade 1 specifically, and four were written for kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 and still suit a grade 1 class. Between them they come to 66 exercises and 0 ruled lines of writing.
The subjects covered at grade 1, largest first, are Map Skills (3), World Geography (2) and Civics & Government (1). That spread is what a grade 1 social studies year tends to look like, and it is uneven on purpose — the topics a grade meets first get more sheets than the ones it meets in passing.
The topics a grade 1 sheet covers
Four distinct topics are covered at grade 1: compass rose and directions, continents and oceans, map keys and legends and rights and responsibilities. Each has its own sheet with its own fact box and its own answer key, so none of them is a variation on the one above it.
The longest of them is Rights and Responsibilities Worksheet at 12 exercises; the shortest is Compass Rose and Directions Worksheet at 10. The target for grade 1 is 10 questions a sheet, and a sheet lands either side of it when the topic needs the room or does not.
How a grade 1 sheet asks its questions
Grade 1 sits in the k-2 band, which this site calls recognition work. Simple matching, choosing and completing. Every blank is filled from a printed word bank, and any written answer is one to three words. The student never has to recall a name or a date from nothing.
Three question types appear across the grade 1 sheets — matching, fill-in-the-blank and true or false — and no single sheet uses all of them. Every blank at this grade is filled from a word bank printed in a box above the questions, so a grade 1 sheet tests whether the idea landed and not whether the word can be spelled from memory.
Sentences of 5 to 10 words, one clause, vocabulary a 5 to 8 year old reads independently. Concrete and local: home, school, neighborhood, directions, community helpers. That is the reading level the grade 1 sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set — a sheet pitched right on the history and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.

- Not at this grade. The six worksheets here cover map skills, world geography and civics. - Do the 1st grade social studies worksheets have answer keys?
- Yes. Every worksheet on the site prints its answer key on a separate page directly after the questions, so the key is part of the same PDF. No account or sign-up is needed to access it.
