Social studies in grade 4
In many US schools, fourth grade social studies often focuses on geography, regional landforms, and map skills alongside an introduction to US history covering colonial America, the Revolutionary War, and key historical figures. Civics topics such as the branches of government are also commonly taught at this level, though the exact topics a class covers can vary by district and teacher.
The 83 worksheets on this page practice topics including the three branches of government, major US rivers, the Great Lakes, the Appalachians and Rockies, colonial America, Revolutionary War battles, early presidents, civil rights leaders, state capitals, climate zones, and latitude and longitude. Teachers and parents can pick any sheet by subject, print the built-in answer key that appears on a separate page, and where needed pull a sheet written for the grade just above or below to match a student's level.

What is on this page
There are 83 printable sheets on this page. 59 of them were written for grade 4 specifically, and 24 were written for grade 3, grade 4 and grade 5 and still suit a grade 4 class. Between them they come to 764 exercises and 139 ruled lines of writing.
The subjects covered at grade 4, largest first, are US Geography (6), US States & Capitals (6), US History: Key Figures (5), World Geography (4), US History: Events & Eras (3), US History: Wars & Battles (3), Map Skills (3) and Civics & Government (2). That spread is what a grade 4 social studies year tends to look like, and it is uneven on purpose — the topics a grade meets first get more sheets than the ones it meets in passing.
51 of the grade 4 sheets are maps to be drawn on rather than pages of questions, one for each of 50 states from Alabama to Wyoming, plus one that prints the whole country with 49 of the 50 states numbered to label. They are listed separately above the card grids, because fifty near-identical cards would push everything else below the fold.
The topics a grade 4 sheet covers
26 distinct topics are covered at grade 4: american revolution: causes and effects, bordering states, civil rights leaders, climate zones, countries by continent, founding fathers, grid coordinates, latitude and longitude, major rivers, map keys and legends, matching people to achievements, mountain ranges, presidents, regions and landforms, revolutionary war battles, scale and distance, state capitals, state nicknames, states by region, the colonial period, the fifty states, the great lakes, the three branches, us territories, world rivers and mountains and world war ii. Each has its own sheet with its own fact box and its own answer key, so none of them is a variation on the one above it.
The longest of them is The Thirteen Colonies Worksheet at 15 exercises; the shortest is Map Keys and Legends Worksheet at 12. The target for grade 4 is 15 questions a sheet, and a sheet lands either side of it when the topic needs the room or does not.
How a grade 4 sheet asks its questions
Grade 4 sits in the 3-5 band, which this site calls application work. Recall and application. The student matches, completes sentences with or without a word bank, judges true and false statements, chooses between plausible options and writes one to two sentences explaining an answer.
Seven question types appear across the grade 4 sheets — timeline placement, multiple choice, true or false, short answer, matching, fill-in-the-blank and map work — and no single sheet uses all of them. There are no word banks at grade 4: the term has to be recalled before it can be used, which is the step that separates this band from the one below it.
Sentences of 8 to 16 words, one or two clauses, vocabulary an 8 to 11 year old meets in a social studies lesson. Dates and proper nouns may be used directly. That is the reading level the grade 4 sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set — a sheet pitched right on the history and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.
