Grade 2 Social Studies Worksheets
Ten free printable grade 2 social studies worksheets, 116 exercises across six subjects. Every sheet prints its answer key on a separate page, and none of them needs an account.
Social studies in grade 2
In many US schools, second grade social studies often introduces children to their roles as community members, basic rules and rights, and early US history. Map skills such as reading a compass rose and understanding map keys are commonly practiced at this level, alongside geography topics like continents, oceans, and US regions. Curriculum varies by district, so the specific topics covered in any classroom may differ.
This page offers ten social studies worksheets touching on civics, map skills, US geography, US history, US states and capitals, and world geography. Three are written specifically for grade 2; the others are written for grade 1 or grade 3 and are noted as suited to this grade. A teacher or parent can pick by subject, print each free PDF as needed, and use the separate answer key page to check work. Sheets from the grade either side can provide lighter or more challenging practice.
What is on this page
There are ten printable sheets on this page. Three of them were written for grade 2 specifically, and seven were written for grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 and still suit a grade 2 class. Between them they come to 116 exercises and 0 ruled lines of writing.
The subjects covered at grade 2, largest first, are Map Skills (3), Civics & Government (2), World Geography (2), US Geography (1), US History: Key Figures (1) and US States & Capitals (1). That spread is what a grade 2 social studies year tends to look like, and it is uneven on purpose — the topics a grade meets first get more sheets than the ones it meets in passing.
The topics a grade 2 sheet covers
Eight distinct topics are covered at grade 2: compass rose and directions, continents and oceans, map keys and legends, presidents, regions and landforms, rights and responsibilities, the fifty states and the three branches. Each has its own sheet with its own fact box and its own answer key, so none of them is a variation on the one above it.
The longest of them is Map Keys and Legends Worksheet at 12 exercises; the shortest is Compass Rose and Directions Worksheet at 10. The target for grade 2 is 12 questions a sheet, and a sheet lands either side of it when the topic needs the room or does not.
How a grade 2 sheet asks its questions
Grade 2 sits in the k-2 band, which this site calls recognition work. Simple matching, choosing and completing. Every blank is filled from a printed word bank, and any written answer is one to three words. The student never has to recall a name or a date from nothing.
Four question types appear across the grade 2 sheets — matching, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice and true or false — and no single sheet uses all of them. Every blank at this grade is filled from a word bank printed in a box above the questions, so a grade 2 sheet tests whether the idea landed and not whether the word can be spelled from memory.
Sentences of 5 to 10 words, one clause, vocabulary a 5 to 8 year old reads independently. Concrete and local: home, school, neighborhood, directions, community helpers. That is the reading level the grade 2 sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set — a sheet pitched right on the history and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.

Grade 2 social studies worksheets: common questions
- What does 2nd grade social studies cover?
- In many US schools, second grade social studies often covers community roles, rights and responsibilities, basic map skills, and introductory geography such as continents and oceans. The worksheets on this page reflect those common topics and also include early US presidents, US regions and landforms, and US states, drawing from sheets written for grades 1 through 3 that are suited to grade 2.
- Are these grade 2 social studies worksheets PDFs?
- Yes. Every worksheet on the site is a free PDF. No account, sign-up, or payment is required to access or download any sheet. Each PDF prints in black ink only and is sized to fit US Letter or A4 paper, so it is ready to print at home or in a classroom without any additional formatting.
- Do the 2nd grade worksheets come with answer keys?
- Yes. Every worksheet prints its answer key on a separate page after the questions, so the answer key is part of the same PDF. Because grade 2 is a recognition level, every blank on these sheets is filled from a printed word bank, which makes the answer key straightforward to use when reviewing a student's completed work.
