Social studies in grade 5
In many US schools, fifth grade social studies often focuses on US history from the colonial era through the twentieth century, alongside geography, civics, and map skills. Students commonly study the thirteen colonies, the American Revolution, westward expansion, the Civil War, and the civil rights movement, and they often practice reading maps, identifying regions, and understanding the branches of government.

How a grade 5 sheet asks its questions
Grade 5 sits in the 3-5 band, which this site calls application work. Recall and application. The student matches, completes sentences with or without a word bank, judges true and false statements, chooses between plausible options and writes one to two sentences explaining an answer.
Seven question types appear across the grade 5 sheets — timeline placement, multiple choice, true or false, short answer, matching, fill-in-the-blank and map work — and no single sheet uses all of them. There are no word banks at grade 5: the term has to be recalled before it can be used, which is the step that separates this band from the one below it.
Sentences of 8 to 16 words, one or two clauses, vocabulary an 8 to 11 year old meets in a social studies lesson. Dates and proper nouns may be used directly. That is the reading level the grade 5 sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set — a sheet pitched right on the history and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.
