Grade 6 Social Studies Worksheets

49 free printable grade 6 social studies worksheets, 859 exercises across eight subjects, one of them maps to draw on. Every sheet prints its answer key on a separate page, and none of them needs an account.

Social studies in grade 6

In many US schools, 6th grade social studies shifts toward a broader view of the world and the nation. Courses often include US geography, civics, early US history, and an introduction to world geography. Some programs emphasize map skills and government structures, while others focus more on historical eras and key figures. The specific topics covered vary by district and curriculum.

This page lists 49 worksheets that practice topics such as the Bill of Rights, westward expansion, civil rights leaders, US mountain ranges, map scale and distance, latitude and longitude, and sorting states by region. Teachers and parents can pick by subject category, print the answer key page separately after the questions, or pull a sheet written for grade 5 or grade 7 when a student needs easier practice or a greater challenge.

What is on this page

There are 49 printable sheets on this page. 16 of them were written for grade 6 specifically, and 33 were written for grade 5, grade 6 and grade 7 and still suit a grade 6 class. Between them they come to 859 exercises and 391 ruled lines of writing.

The subjects covered at grade 6, largest first, are US History: Events & Eras (7), US History: Key Figures (7), US History: Wars & Battles (7), Civics & Government (6), US Geography (6), US States & Capitals (6), World Geography (5) and Map Skills (4). That spread is what a grade 6 social studies year tends to look like, and it is uneven on purpose — the topics a grade meets first get more sheets than the ones it meets in passing.

One of the grade 6 sheets are maps to be drawn on rather than pages of questions, plus one that prints the whole country with 49 of the 50 states numbered to label. They are listed separately above the card grids, because fifty near-identical cards would push everything else below the fold.

The topics a grade 6 sheet covers

36 distinct topics are covered at grade 6: american revolution: causes and effects, civil rights leaders, civil war battles, constitution basics, countries by continent, explorers and pioneers, founding fathers, grid coordinates, how a bill becomes a law, inventors and scientists, latitude and longitude, levels of government, major rivers, mountain ranges, physical and political maps, reconstruction, revolutionary war battles, scale and distance, state abbreviations, state capitals, state nicknames, states by region, the bill of rights, the civil rights movement, the colonial period, the great depression, the great lakes, the korean war, timelines and sequencing, us territories, war timelines, westward expansion, world capitals, world rivers and mountains, world war i and world war ii. Each has its own sheet with its own fact box and its own answer key, so none of them is a variation on the one above it.

The longest of them is Constitution Basics: Preamble, Structure, and Amendments at 18 exercises; the shortest is The Thirteen Colonies Worksheet at 15. The target for grade 6 is 18 questions a sheet, and a sheet lands either side of it when the topic needs the room or does not.

How a grade 6 sheet asks its questions

Grade 6 sits in the 6-8 band, which this site calls analysis work. Analysis and explanation. The student writes two to three sentences, compares and contrasts, traces cause and effect, and builds or reads a timeline. No word banks: a student at this band recalls the term and then argues with it.

Seven question types appear across the grade 6 sheets — multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true or false, short answer, timeline placement, matching and map work — and no single sheet uses all of them. There are no word banks at grade 6: the term has to be recalled before it can be used, which is the step that separates this band from the one below it.

Sentences of 12 to 24 words with subordinate clauses, and the academic vocabulary of the discipline — sovereignty, ratify, secession, tariff — used precisely and in context. That is the reading level the grade 6 sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set — a sheet pitched right on the history and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.
